BellSouth Foundation College-Going Minorities Initiative

October 2002-October 2005

The BellSouth College-Going Minorities (CGM) initiative, funded and administered by the BellSouth Foundation, was designed to help higher education institutions in BellSouth's nine state Southeast service area address the obstacles minority college students face that undermine their ability to succeed.

The BellSouth Foundation selected seven institutions to receive three-year grants to support the implementation of campus strategies encouraging greater minority student persistence and success in higher education and beyond. Participating schools include:

  • The University of Alabama, Huntsville (Huntsville, AL);
  • Macon State College (Macon, GA);
  • Jackson State University (Jackson, MS);
  • The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (Laurinburg, NC);
  • Trident Technical College (Charleston, SC);
  • Miami-Dade College (Miami, FL);
  • Spaulding University (Louisville, KY).

The Association of American Colleges & Universities serves as an evaluation resource to assist the grantees in assessing their projects and their impact on achieving the institutions' overall diversity goals. The evaluation model AAC&U uses helps campuses to build their capacity to conduct sound evaluations of their diversity efforts and to use their findings to underscore diversity's central role in institutional vitality both during the grant and after funding ends.

AAC&U staff has conducted site visits to each campus and arranged for CGM grantees to meet together regularly to network, introduce methodologies and innovations, and learn from one another.
