Preparing Students for the Rigor and Responsibility of a New Global Century
Uri Treisman, professor of mathematics and executive director of the Charles A. Dana Center at the University of Texas at Austin, explores the emerging research and practices that raise student achievement and help more students reap the full benefits of college. He identifies ways to tie engaged learning practices to "big questions" regarding learning communities, undergraduate research, and problem-based learning, and to integrate them into disciplinary and departmental curricular efforts. The Impact of Teaching and Institutional Conditions on Student Learning
Charles F. Blaich, director of inquiries, Center of Inquiry in the Liberal Arts of Wabash College, presents a longitudinal study of engaging learning and teaching practices, programs, student experiences, and institutional conditions that promote liberal education. The discussion focuses on evidence gathered from the study of the impact of a wide variety of teaching practices and institutional conditions on critical thinking, moral reasoning, leadership, attitudes about and orientation to diversity, well-being, and the inclination to inquire. It also address the extent and impact of these conditions and practices for students who traditionally have been underserved in higher education. Recorded Friday April 11, 2008.

From Communities of Practice to Communities of Action: When Being a Good Teacher is Not Enough
Emily Lardner and Gillies Malnarich, co-directors of the Washington Center for Improving the Quality of Undergraduate Education at the Evergreen State College, address what is required of the higher education community to achieve equitable learning opportunities for all students. They examine a sample test used to determine high school graduation and access to college, and discuss the implications of such a standardized test for fostering in students the intellectual and practical skills needed to succeed in college, work, and life in a complex and global society.
