Shared Futures: Global Learning and Social Responsibility
Liberal Education and Global Citizenship:
The Arts of Democracy
Liberal Education and Global Citizenship: The Arts of Democracy, was a three-year project designed to develop societal, civic, and global knowledge in undergraduates. Participating institutions worked to develop courses within undergraduate majors to address global issues, diversity issues, questions of justice and equality, and democratic practices and principles in the context of our interdependent but unequal world. The project, supported by the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, was the first funded project of the ongoing Shared Futures: Global Learning and Social Responsibility initiative. Its success led to the current General Education for Global Learning project.
The project supported faculty and administrative teams with a series of activities, including a four-day faculty institute, an online faculty development seminar, campus-based faculty development activities, and working forums at AAC&U's regional and annual meetings. It culminated in the publication of two monographs, Shared Futures: Global Learning and Liberal Education and Assessing Global Learning: Matching Good Intentions with Good Practice. Both these pieces are also available as PDFs.
Objectives:
- Generate new knowledge about global studies,
- Spur greater civic engagement and social responsibility,
- Promote in faculty and students a deeper knowledge of, debate about, and practice of democracy, and
- Cultivate intercultural competencies with the faculty as well as the students.
