Institutionalizing Service Learning at the University of Houston–Downtown

Faculty and students at the University of Houston–Downtown (UHD) have long been engaged with the surrounding Houston community—“it was one of the things that actually attracted me to this position,” says William Flores, president of UHD. But despite the broad range of projects carried out by individual faculty and staff members, there was little institutional support for these projects—faculty working on community-based projects often did so in isolation from each other and received little recognition for their work.
