General Education Maps and Markers: Equity Working Group

The Equity Working Group examined educational practices and strategies that advance the depth and pace of learning for diverse students. Based on evidence of “what works” for underserved student success, this working group has recommended strategies to increase access to high quality learning that will foster equitable levels of demonstrated achievement of learning outcomes and degree completion for all students.

The Equity Working Group contributed key feedback on America’s Unmet Promise: The Imperative for Equity in Higher Education, by Keith Witham, Lindsey E. Malcom-Piqueux, Alicia C. Dowd and Estela Mara Bensimon, which assembles a broad mass of data that demonstrate how minority, first-generation, and other traditionally underserved populations have fewer opportunities for a sound education at every level of our education system. Witham et al. suggest several principles of “equity-mindedness” to guide any reform effort in higher education, including general education. The group’s work also supported Step Up and Lead for Equity and Committing to Equity and Inclusive Excellence, a booklet that accompanies America’s Unmet Promise.
