College Learning for the New Global Century (pdf)
This report is about the aims and outcomes of a 21st century college education. It is also about the promises we need to make--and keep--to all students who aspire to a college education. This report, based on extensive input both from educators and employers, responds to the new global challenges today's students face. It describes the learning contemporary students need from college, and what it will take to help them achieve it. You can also view the powerpoint presentation from the report release on January 10, 2007.

Perspectives on the Value of Liberal Education
This series of articles in AAC&U's flagship journal, Liberal Education, examines the value of liberal education from a variety of view points and perspectives, including those of the business community.

Focus Group Discussion Guide
This discussion guide (pdf) was developed for focus groups AAC&U commissioned in 2004-05 and can be used by campuses to gather information about students’ understanding of and attitudes toward liberal education and key college outcomes.

Business Leaders Surveys

New (January 2008) business leader poll, "How Should Colleges Assess And Improve Student Learning? Employers' Views on the Accountability Challenge." Download the report (pdf) or view the powerpoint presentation of the results.

Findings from the 2007 survey suggest that 2/3 of employers say graduates lack essential skills and that 76 percent endorse a liberal education that provides broad knowledge and skills, specific skills appropriate for chosen fields, and real-world applications. See what business leaders want colleges to "place more emphasis" on.

Campus Community Dialogue Sample Program
This sample program is designed as a template that campuses can use or modify to sponsor dialogues with on-campus and off-campus constituents about the important outcomes of a liberal education.

Making The Case for Liberal Education: Responding to Challenges
This publication in the Liberal Education and America’s Promise series draws on findings from AAC&U-sponsored public opinion research conducted in 2005 and 2006.  It presents a set of common challenges to the argument for liberal education’s value in today’s world and a set of responses that have proven effective with different constituents—including with students, prospective students, and business leaders.  Ideal for campuses or individuals who want to become better advocates for liberal education.  (See downloadable pdf or the AAC&U online store to purchase copies.)

Communicating Commitment to Liberal Education: A Self-Study Guide for Institutions
This publication in the Liberal Education and America’s Promise series includes a set of questions designed for campus dialogues that cut across campus divisions and departments.  It is designed to help institutions become more intentional about aligning programs and practices with professed goals for liberal education learning outcomes.  (See downloadable pdf or the AAC&U online store to purchase copies.)
