American Conference of Academic Deans
62nd Annual Meeting
ARTICULATING THE VALUE AND MANAGING THE CULTURE OF LIBERAL
EDUCATION
ACAD’s Annual Meeting focuses attention on the apparent
disconnect between two views of liberal education. One view,
held by many in the academy, holds that liberal education
is the most powerful and appropriate form of education to
prepare students to function in the 21st century.
A second view, often attributed to U.S. society in general,
holds that liberal education is out of touch with contemporary
realities, an unaffordable luxury, or simply impractical.
ACAD seeks to examine this disconnect and focus on the role
of academic deans in making the value of liberal education
more evident and salient by both articulating the value and
managing the culture of liberal education.
