Conference Overview

Higher education’s role in supporting discovery, innovation, and the value of evidence is essential not only to our nation’s global preeminence in science and technology, but also to our ability to address a range of contemporary questions. Increasingly, our college and university graduates are called upon to address multiple interconnected challenges—including preserving cybersecurity, maintaining economic stability, mitigating climate change, eliminating health disparities, and guarding the integrity of proven hypotheses as a precondition for decision making.

To solve these multifaceted problems, today’s STEM graduates are required to master core content and apply it through broad portfolios demonstrating inquiry and analysis, and to effectively communicate the results thereof across disciplinary, language, educational, and societal boundaries. In order for students to achieve this kind of STEM proficiency, faculty must teach differently—requiring greater aptitude in negotiating uncomfortable situations and difficult dialogues, use of broader definitions of what counts as evidence, and dogged pursuit of the inclusion of all perspectives and worldviews as a requirement for realizing excellence.

AAC&U’s Transforming STEM Higher Education conference will address the importance of STEM proficiency for STEM majors and nonmajors alike, as well as the importance of empowering the faculty on whom we rely to increase the number of competitively trained and liberally educated graduates. We invite scholars from across the nation to come together to understand, appreciate, and articulate—in new ways—the complexities of undergraduate STEM teaching and the most appropriate and culturally relevant mechanisms for improving it.
