78 Campuses Selected to Attend AAC&U Summer Institutes on General Education Reform; Making Excellence Inclusive; and Engaging Departments with Learning Outcomes and Assessment

Participants Will Work to Reform and Assess General Education Programs, Build Campus Leadership and Capacity to Make Excellence Inclusive and Raise Student Achievement, and Focus Departments on Advancing Cross-Cutting Learning Outcomes and Their Assessment

Washington, DC – May 21, 2009 – The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) announced today the colleges, universities, and state systems sending teams to its 2009 summer institutes. Teams of five or more from each institution will attend one of three summer institutes: the Institute on General Education at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities in Minneapolis, Minnesota (May 29-June 3, 2009); the Greater Expectations Institute on Campus Leadership for Student Engagement, Inclusion, and Achievement at the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont (June 17-21, 2009); and the Engaging Departments Institute at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (July 8-12, 2009).

“AAC&U’s 2009 summer institutes are designed to address some of the most important educational issues facing colleges and universities. It is always exciting and energizing to see the engaged teams of educational leaders and faculty who attend these institutes all working together to improve liberal learning outcomes for their students,” said AAC&U president Carol Geary Schneider. “This year we are very pleased to add to our existing institutes a new institute on Engaging Departments to support the development of leadership within and across departments for strengthening and assessing students’ achievement of liberal education outcomes.”

Now in its twentieth year, the Institute on General Education focuses on advancing general education reform efforts at campuses of all sorts. Teams come to AAC&U’s Greater Expectations Institute to build their own institutional capacity and campus leadership to increase the engagement, inclusion, and high achievement of all their students. The Engaging Departments Institute will support the development of leadership within and across departments for strengthening and assessing students’ liberal learning.  Engaging Departments was developed with assistance from the Teagle Foundation.

All AAC&U institutes offer campus teams a time and place for sustained collaborative work on a project of importance to their campus.
