State Higher Education System-wide Assessment
The
State Council of Higher Education in Virginia
(SCHEV) gathers “reports of institutional effectiveness”
(ROIE) annually to document (among other things) student achievement
of selected learning outcomes at Virginia public colleges
and universities. ROIE currently include data on student competence
in written communication, technology/information literacy,
quantitative reasoning, and scientific reasoning. Each campus
creates a mission-specific definition of the outcome and administers
its own assessment, reporting the percentages of students
meeting the campus’s competency requirements. The SCHEV
Web site includes each campus’s definitions of the outcomes
and explanations of the assessment procedures used.
ROIE also include fourteen “system wide measures”
reported uniformly by all institutions and “institution
specific measures” that highlight characteristics chosen
by each school as important to institutional mission and vision.
The SCHEV Web site includes both general information and the
individual campus reports for the entire Virginia public higher
education system.
