Writing Assessments
Many colleges and universities have developed their own rubrics which they use to foster and assess written communication outcomes. Reviewing rubrics from several campuses can help focus local thinking about expectations for student learning in this area. See the rubric collection at Opened Practices.

6

of good writing, with five levels for each element. An analytical
rubric that could be used for instructor, peer, and self-assessment.
Standards
for a “C” grade in English Composition (State
of Maryland)
An interesting attempt to establish a statewide understanding
of C-level work, bringing some between-campus consistency
to writing assessment. While only the C-level is described,
Maryland had established a moderately high expectation for
a “C,” implying the need for really good writing
at the “B” and “A” levels.
