Writing Assessments

Many colleges and universities have developed their own rubrics which they use to foster and assess written communication outcomes.  Reviewing rubrics from several campuses can help focus local thinking about expectations for student learning in this area.  See the rubric collection at Opened Practices.

Writing Proficiency Exam (California Polytechnic State University)
This is a very student-friendly site that explains all of the procedures for taking this exam that certifies graduation level writing skill. Click through the pages or visit the index to see a variety of topics including writing under pressure, workshop dates, sample essays with comments, and scoring standards.

6 + 1 Trait Writing Assessment Scoring Guide (Northwest Regional Education Laboratory)
A highly detailed guide for assessing each of six elements of good writing, with five levels for each element. An analytical rubric that could be used for instructor, peer, and self-assessment.

Standards for a “C” grade in English Composition (State of Maryland)
An interesting attempt to establish a statewide understanding of C-level work, bringing some between-campus consistency to writing assessment. While only the C-level is described, Maryland had established a moderately high expectation for a “C,” implying the need for really good writing at the “B” and “A” levels.
