Service Learning/Community-Based Practices

Amizade Volunteer and Service Learning Programs
Amizade is a non-profit organization that encourages intercultural exploration and understanding through community-driven volunteer programs and service-learning programs. Its service learning programs offer undergraduate and graduate credit to students interested in challenging academic and service experiences with communities around the world. Along with hosting a global consortium on service-learning, Amizade launches partnerships with different universities in the US and across the globe to promote innovative service-learning programs for educational credit.

Boston College Volunteer and Service Learning Center
The Volunteer and Service Learning Center serves members of the Boston College community by assisting students, staff and faculty who are seeking opportunities to serve in the greater Boston area. It creates a network between existing student service and immersion organizations, and helps departments in their efforts to offer safe, high quality experiences for those who want to serve others. Additionally, the VSLC has developed a growing resource center in order to provide students, staff and faculty with tools for education, team formation and theological reflection. Opportunities like the Eagle Volunteer Corps allow students, faculty, and staff to commit to regular service.

Carlson Center at the University of Washington
The Carlson Center provides avenues to undergraduates for understanding, building and improving its communities. This goal is reached through the development and support of programs designed to incorporate academic coursework with community-based learning and leadership. These opportunities for learning outside the classroom deepen a student's understanding of complex, philosophical, economic and political issues and develop a sense of civic responsibility at the University, throughout Seattle and the Northwest and on a global level. In partnership with the university's curriculum, the Carlson Center strives to help students think critically about issues facing society today and to make these issues personally meaningful, to encourage students to see beyond the immediacy of class schedules and grades.

Foothill College Service Learning Volunteer Center
Foothill College has its own Service Learning Volunteer Center (SLVC) which supports student, campus and community service by offering several ways for students to volunteer depending on each student's interests and availability. The SLVC provides information for ongoing volunteer opportunities as well as done-in-a-day projects. Beyond projects, it also offers college credit through enrollment in community service courses that allow students to obtain a Certificate of Completion in Leadership and Community Service. In addition, the SLVC and on-campus Financial Aid Office now offer the Community Service Work Study Program. Students who qualify for federal work study can complete work-study assignments at local non-profit agencies

International Partnership for Service-Learning and Leadership
Founded in 1982, this not-for-profit educational organization was incorporated in New York State serving students, colleges, universities, service agencies and related organizations around the world by fostering programs that link volunteer service to the community and academic study. It offers programs uniting academic study and volunteer service to the community in international and intercultural settings that are models for the practice of service-learning. It also promotes the theory and practice of service-learning through ample research, publications, conferences, and training. IPSL Programs are offered in 14 countries in which academic study is intertwined with credit and volunteer service, giving students a fully integrated study abroad experience. Both students and the host communities benefit from the substantial service each student gives. By studying at a local university and serving 15-20 hours per week in a school, orphanage, health clinic or other agency addressing human needs, students are given the chance to develop in-depth understanding of their host cultures as well as of themselves.

Service Learning at Marquette University
Service Learning is an academic program at Marquette University  that enables students to perform meaningful community service related to their courses. Classroom theory is combined with community service thereby enriching students' learning, personal growth and sense of civic responsibility. At the same time, this work builds community and enhances the efforts of the collaborating agencies as well.

The Texas Center for Service Learning
The Texas Center for Service-Learning seeks to improve student achievement through service-learning. The Center does this by assisting students, teachers, administrators and communities in Texas with programs, training, technical assistance and resources to develop and strengthen service-learning. Operating four programs that promote and support service-learning in Texas including the Texas K-12 School-Community Partnership Grant Program, Title IV Community Service Grant Program, Community-Higher Education-School (CHES) Partnership Grant Program, and Homeland Security Grant Program, the Center thereby works to make service-learning a common experience for all Texas students.

University of Colorado at Boulder's Service Learning Office
Awarded a place among 81 of the "Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement" by Campus Compact and The Princeton Review, the University of Colorado at Boulder’s Service Learning Office has incorporated community service in its agenda in many ways. The Service Learning Office supports teachers in creating and implementing such courses through consultation, networking, and grants. It also offers resources such as literature to help guide and model a service program and scholarships for students engaged in community service.
