Areas of Focus
In coordination with member institutions and on their behalf, AAC&U engages in advocacy within the higher education community and beyond it. The overall goal is to improve the public standing of liberal education by demonstrating and championing the economic and civic value of a liberal education, its ongoing relevance to students’ career aspirations, and its essential role in equipping students for lifelong learning, civic participation, and personal flourishing.
Through its Office of Diversity, Equity, and Student Success, AAC&U works to accelerate broad-scale innovation and institutional change to advance evidence-based educational strategies, including, but not limited to, the intentional design and implementation of high-impact practices and guided learning pathways that engage diversity and challenge inequities in student outcomes to make excellence inclusive. AAC&U seeks to fully prepare the next generation of strategic leaders and thinkers to advance equity, inclusion, and social justice through higher levels of personal and social responsibility.
Through its Office of Global Citizenship for Campus, Community, and Careers, AAC&U works to advance integrative global learning through embedded community-based settings of all types, local and international. This work is intended to align multiple areas of campus programming, both academic and cocurricular, to realize more wholly integrated campus initiatives that prepare students for life, work, and citizenship.
Through its Office of Quality, Curriculum, and Assessment, AAC&U works to promote curricular coherence through a focus on learning outcomes and the application of ePortfolios—both in general education curricula and beyond—and to advance assessment practices that meaningfully incorporate students’ demonstrated student learning. AAC&U leverages these practices to advocate for learner-centered, equitable policies and practices that engage multiple campus stakeholders in creating curricula and assessments that support a high-quality liberal education for all students.
Through its Office of Undergraduate STEM Education, AAC&U works to empower institutions of higher education to catalyze higher education reform in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); lead national efforts that foster discovery and innovation in STEM faculty professional development; and advance equity in service to building a diverse, competitively trained STEM workforce.
