Bethany Zecher Sutton
Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to the President, Office of Outreach and Member Engagement, AAC&U
As Chief of Staff, Bethany Sutton manages the agenda of the Association’s president and helps guide the full range of AAC&U’s work to advance quality and inclusive excellence in undergraduate education. She serves as a strategic advisor to the president and senior staff on ongoing programs, internal operations, and grant-funded initiatives at AAC&U. She leads senior-level hiring for the Association and, in 2015-16, coordinated AAC&U’s presidential search. Bethany also serves as secretary to the board of directors and currently is working closely with the board and staff on AAC&U’s 2018-22 strategic plan.
Bethany leads the Office of Outreach and Member Engagement at AAC&U, which includes the departments of Communications, Membership, Development, Information Services, and Database Services. In that role, she works to integrate the activities that support AAC&U’s members and the programs and services that the organization provides to the higher education community.
Prior to coming to AAC&U in 2001, Bethany worked in the Office of the Provost at the University of Pennsylvania, first as staff assistant to the Provost and then as executive assistant to the Associate Provost.
Bethany earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Mary Washington College (now the University of Mary Washington) and a master’s degree in history from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she served as a teaching assistant for introductory courses in American History. She currently serves as a faculty member for the HERS Institutes, which provide intensive leadership development for women in higher education.
