Achieving Faculty Diversity: Debunking the Myths

The research study punctures some popularly held beliefs about methods for diversifying faculty and offers a complex picture of higher education's progress in this area. Composed of hard data and poignant voices of employed and unemployed doctoral recipients, this book provides important information for institutional planning, makes suggestions for insuring a more diverse faculty, and shows how institutions can be more proactive in helping doctoral students find suitable employment. 

Making Diversity Work on Campus: A Research-Based Perspective

The authors discuss recent empirical evidence, gathered on behalf of the University of Michigan Supreme Court defense, demonstrating the educational benefits of diverse learning environments. These are environments that must be intentionally planned and nurtured, where diversity is conceived of as a process toward better learning and not merely an outcome that one can check off a list. Included are numerous suggestions for how to engage diversity in the service of learning, ranging from recruiting a compositionally diverse student body, faculty, and staff to transforming curriculum, co-curriculum, and pedagogy to reflect and support goals for inclusion and excellence.

Greater Expectations: A New Vision for Learning as a Nation Goes to College
2002

This report of the Greater Expectations National Panel calls for a new focus on excellence to better prepare students for the 21st century world. The report recommends the creation of a New Academy characterized by high expectations, a focus on learning, commitment to demonstrated achievement, intentional practices, and an engaged, practical liberal education for all students.


About the Initiative

Greater Expectations, a major initiative of AAC&U from 2000-2006, articulated the aims and purposes of a twenty-first century liberal education, identified innovative models that improve campus practices and learning for all undergraduate students, and advocated for a comprehensive approach to reform. The work of the Greater Expectations initiative laid the foundation for AAC&U's current initiative Liberal Education and America's Promise.

Provides tips and tools for designing and developing effective diversity evaluations. Topics addressed include the need for assessment, designing an evaluation plan, institutional context, audience, data collection and analysis, performance indicators, and theoretical models. An appendix also includes sample assessment and evaluation tools from campuses across the country.

Gender, Science, and the Undergraduate Curriculum: Building Two-Way Streets
2001

This anthology emerges from AAC&U's curriculum and faculty development project, Women and Scientific Literacy: Building Two-Way Streets. The project examined the core questions: "How can things be done differently to increase the numbers of women who study science, math and engineering?" and "How will the new scholarship about women and gender alter science itself and how science is understood both within its own disciplines and beyond?" The essays in this book demonstrate ways to integrate this new scholarship-known as feminist science studies scholarship--and new teaching practices into basic science courses, for non-majors as well as majors, and into women's studies courses. Authors address issues of course content, pedagogy, institutional change, and policy. They describe new and revised courses in the fields of biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, history, physics, and women's studies.

Diversity Blueprint: A Planning Manual for Colleges and Universities

Comprehensive, detailed guide addressing creating, expanding, and institutionalizing campus-wide diversity initiatives. The manual explains principles and priorities that are crucial in creating a diverse environment, as well as the legal decisions and research that have brought national attention to the issue of diversity. Topics include how to begin diversity planning, the complexity of handling external influences to the campus, affirmative action, curricular transformation, faculty/staff hiring and retention, and building campus-wide support.

Asian Pacific American Women in Higher Education

Examines the perils and pitfalls of being seen as a member of the "model minority," describes the complexity and diversity within the Asian Pacific American community, and discusses ways to challenge a unique set of racial, sexual, social, and linguistic stereotypes. Includes recommendations for improving campus climate and developing a more inclusive curriculum for all students, broadening access and increasing retention, reforming institutional policies and practices, and much more.

Black Women in Academe: Issues and Strategies

Explores the climate for black women students, faculty members, and administrators in both predominantly white colleges and universities as well as historically black colleges and universities, focusing on the ways that race and gender stereotypes can combine to create double obstacles for black women. Recommendations and resources are provided to help institutions be more supportive and aware of the needs of black women.
