2018 Ohio-PKAL Annual Conference
Promoting Effective Learning in a Diverse STEM Environment
Join us for the Ohio Project Kaleidoscope (OH-PKAL) 4th annual one-day conference, Promoting Effective Learning in a Diverse STEM Environment on Saturday May 19, 2018. The conference is conveniently located at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio.
The day includes a vibrant program of oral presentations, posters, lunch table discussions, and workshops promoting evidence-based practices across five important themes:
- Fully Realizing Talents: Supporting Talented STEM Students from Diverse Backgrounds
- Promoting Effective Learning Across Teaching Environments
- Metacognition in a Diverse Environment
- Bridging the Gap: Ensuring Successful STEM Transitions
- Trailblazing Technology to Enhance STEM Learning.
The conference will open with Dr. Melvin Hall’s keynote address: “Promoting Effective Learning in a Diverse STEM Environment: Hidden Factors That Undermine Your Success”. Dr. Hall is Professor of Educational Psychology at Northern Arizona University, and Senior Scholar in AAC&U’s Office of Undergraduate STEM Education. The keynote kicks off a day of oral presentations, posters, lunch table discussions, and workshops. (See the program).
This year the conference features long-form workshops at no additional charge.

The conference sessions begin at 8:30AM and will end by 5:00PM.
Conference Registration and Fees
The conference registration fee is $85 for professionals with travel support and $65 for students or professionals without travel support. This fee includes all conference sessions and workshops, continental breakfast, lunch, and conference materials. Conference registration is online. Click here to register. Campus housing is available at the University of Mount Union. Residence hall housing can be selected and paid online when registering for the meeting. Rates for rooms are:
- "Super" Single (room for one person with private bath) - $50 per person/per night
- Single (room for one person with shared bath) - $39 per person/per night
Residence hall guests can bring their own linens or rent them for $12.50. Linens include 2 flat sheets, 1 pillow case, 2 washcloths and two bath towels.

OH-PKAL STEM Educator Award 2018
Ohio PKAL seeks nominations for the 2018 STEM Educator Award. This award recognizes excellence and innovation in the field of STEM education at the college level. One Ohio STEM educator is honored annually and will receive a $500 award. The recipient will be recognized during the 2018 Ohio PKAL Conference. OH-PKAL STEM Teaching Partnership Grant 2018
The Ohio PKAL STEM Teaching Partnership grant provides up to $500 for a multi-institutional team to visit each other’s institutions to observe class and laboratory sessions and share effective pedagogical techniques. Teaching Partnership grant recipients will be announced during the 2018 Annual Ohio PKAL Conference, Promoting Effective Learning in a Diverse STEM Environment, University of Mount Union, May 19, 2018. OH-PKAL STEM Teaching Collaboration Project Grant 2018
The Ohio PKAL STEM Teaching Collaboration Project grant provides up to $500 for a team to implement a teaching technique in classes and evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching technique.
